Named for a Legend, Built for the Future
Malone Stadium, officially known as JPS Field at Malone Stadium, is the long-time home of the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) Warhawks football team. The stadium is named in honor of James L. Malone, the most successful football coach in school history, who led the program for 20 seasons. Since its opening in 1978, the venue has been the central stage for ULM’s greatest athletic moments.
A History of Expansion and Transformation
The stadium was constructed to replace the smaller Brown Stadium, a necessity driven by the determination of local leaders to establish a major college football program.
- Initial Opening: Malone Stadium debuted on September 16, 1978, with an initial seating capacity of 20,000, quickly establishing a strong home-field advantage.
- Seating Expansion: Significant expansion projects, including seating extensions into both end zones in 1983 and a major addition in 1993, increased the capacity to its current figure of approximately 27,617 (sometimes cited as 30,427), making it a formidable Sun Belt venue.
- Modern Field: The playing surface, JPS Field, was named following the installation of a FieldTurf synthetic surface in 2014, funded by JPS Aviation/JPS Equipment Rental, ensuring a consistently elite playing environment.
State-of-the-Art Athletic Complex
Malone Stadium is a modern facility that integrates athletic operations and fan amenities:
- Warhawk Fieldhouse: A state-of-the-art, 11,750-square-foot facility opened in 2016 in the northwest corner. It provides modern locker rooms, coaches’ offices, an impressive ULM football history display, and a patio overlooking the field, significantly enhancing the recruiting and athlete experience.
- Skybox and Press Facilities: The towering west grandstand houses a two-level skybox, luxury suites, press accommodations, and the ULM Athletic Department offices, ensuring functional and high-quality spaces for operations and premium guests.
Record Crowds and Community Pride
Malone Stadium continues to be the site of memorable events, having hosted a record-setting crowd of 31,175 during a game against Baylor in 2012. Located across Bayou Desiard, the stadium is a proud symbol of Warhawk tradition, uniting the ULM campus and the Monroe community every gameday.
